
BOSTON — Patriots quarterback Tom Brady underwent surgery for a stress fracture on his right foot Thursday.
A screw was inserted in the navicular bone, one of the small bones in the mid-foot located at the instep, according to Comcast SportsNet New England.
Brady, who led the NFL in touchdown passes (36) and fewest interceptions (four), is expected to be ready for training camp, if not sooner. He will be replaced by Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel for the Jan. 30 Pro Bowl in Honolulu.
Wannstedt, Browns talk
CLEVELAND — The Browns interviewed former NFL and Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt to be their defensive coordinator.
Wannstedt was forced to resign at Pitt after going 7-5 this season, his sixth at the school. Wannstedt also has drawn interest from Buffalo.
Titans, Cecil part ways
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Chuck Cecil said Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher has decided not to keep him as the Titans’ defensive coordinator after two seasons in which the team ranked among the NFL’s worst in yards allowed.
Fisher informed Cecil of the decision nearly three weeks after the Titans wrapped up a 6-10 season by losing eight of their final nine games.
“I understand,” Cecil said. “I’m the defensive coordinator, and we didn’t play as well as needed to on defense.”
Seahawks hire Bevell
RENTON, Wash. — Pete Carroll wasted little time filling the most prominent opening on his coaching staff, making Darrell Bevell the Seahawks’ new offensive coordinator.
Bevell, the Vikings’ offensive coordinator the past five seasons, replaces Jeremy Bates, who was fired Tuesday after just one season in Seattle.
Matsko employed again
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Panthers hired John Matsko as offensive line coach a day after he was fired by the Ravens.
Brees wins Starr Award
NEW ORLEANS — Saints quarterback Drew Brees won the 2011 Bart Starr Award, which honors players who demonstrate good character in the home as well as leadership on their teams and in their communities.
