Q: If 4G networks are designed specifically for Internet traffic, how then will we be able to make calls with the new phones? (Andy Sutton, Denver)

A: Calls placed on 4G cellphones are routed through existing 3G networks. Sprint and Verizon Wireless, which launched 4G service with new network infrastructure in the Denver area in December, say they will maintain their 3G networks for the foreseeable future. AT&T’s and T-Mobile’s 4G networks are actually upgraded 3G networks.
