The most significant change in the Bolder Boulder course since the finish line was moved to Folsom Field in 1981 will greet runners come Memorial Day.
The race will start about a mile south of its traditional start on 30th Street. The change is being made to ease traffic and parking concerns, because it will put the starting line much closer to the finish at Folsom Field.
“We understand that the course is the soul of a race, and we were quite reluctant to make changes unless the benefits are very profound,” race director Cliff Bosley said. “After years of discussion and analysis, we concluded that the benefits of the new start line outweigh any nostalgic attachment to the old one.”
Instead of starting the race with a long downhill (south) that tricks runners into going out too fast, the new course will have them going uphill (north) about a half-mile on 30th Street. After a left turn at Valmont, the race will turn south on 28th Street to Pine. It then will pick up the old course on Folsom.
