Scientists have confirmed that a skull found in December in Teller County was that of a woman who was killed in Fremont County.

A North Carolina laboratory determined that a skull found by a hunter was that of 44-year-old Rebecca Magallanes, said Teller County Coroner Al Born.

John Paul Williams, 58, has been charged with first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse in the Nov. 9 shooting death of Magallanes, who was his common-law wife.

Williams is alleged to have killed Magallanes, dismembered her body and distributed the remains in Teller and Custer counties.

Psychiatrists determined that Williams was incompetent to understand court proceedings, and he is currently at the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo, said Molly Chilson, deputy district attorney for Fremont County. Kirk Mitchell, The Denver Post
