SALIDA, Colo.—The driver of a gasoline tanker has died in a fiery crash that closed U.S. 50 between Salida (suh-LY’-duh) and Swissvale for about seven hours.

Fremont County Coroner Dorothy Twellman identified the driver as 78-year-old Allen Hubbard of Denver.

Authorities say preliminary reports indicate he was heading east on U.S. 50 around 9 a.m. Friday when the tanker went off the road on a curve, overturned and exploded, about 14 miles east of Salida.

Twellman says Hubbard was wearing a seat belt. She says he had been in the tanker business for 60 years.

The Colorado State Patrol was investigating the accident. The agency’s hazardous materials team cleaned up some fuel that spilled from the tanker.
