A 41-year-old man was killed when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver as he crossed the street early Sunday morning, Aurora police said.

An Aurora Police and Fire Rescue unit found Royce Wallace in Havana Street near East First Avenue at 2:30 a.m. after someone reported a “man down,” police said.

Wallace was taken to the hospital with severe injuries and died about 5:45 a.m. The person who called police to report that Wallace was injured didn’t see the accident. Police said they had no other witnesses.

“Investigators will now begin the difficult task of attempting to identify the vehicle from what evidence was left at the scene,” the release said.

Traffic investigators have determined that Wallace was hit as he crossed Havana about 500 feet south of the intersection with East First Avenue.
