Railroad buffs, rejoice: A historic locomotive has landed in Silver Plume to join the Georgetown Loop Railroad.

A 1923 80-ton Shay steam locomotive arrived in Colorado on Monday, hauled in on a semi flatbed trailer from its former home in Iowa, according to a Colorado Historical Society release.

The No. 9 Shay narrow-gauge locomotive should be on track and running this upcoming 2011 season, the historical society said.

The No. 9 is one of the three largest Shay narrow-gauge steam locomotives ever built, according to the release.

Historic Rail Adventures, operator of the loop railroad, is leasing the locomotive from Midwest Central Railroad of Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Kieran Nicholson, The Denver Post
