Colorado State football coach Steve Fairchild announced five adjustments to his staff Friday. The moves were not unexpected after last season’s 3-9 record.
No assistants were fired.
Larry Lewis, previously in charge of safeties and special teams, was named associate head coach, special- teams coordinator and running backs coach.
Cornerbacks coach Tim Duffie, coming off a standout recruiting effort in the state of Texas, will now coach the entire secondary. Scott Brown, who helped turn former defensive tackle Guy Miller into one of the few defensive bright spots, takes over linebackers. That move frees Larry Kerr to concentrate on his overall defensive coordinator responsibilities.
In his second year, Todd Stroud moves from tight ends coach to defensive line coach. Running backs coach Anthoney Hill takes over for Stroud.
“Based on how we finished last year, I thought we could jump-start ourselves a little bit, give a little fresh approach on either side of the ball,” Fairchild said.
The fourth-year coach said he separated the defensive coordinator role from position coach responsibilities to allow Kerr to “step back a little more and look at the whole picture. I also think it lets Larry work with everyone.” Natalie Meisler, The Denver Post
Wyoming hires Brandon, Robinson.
Wyoming football coach Dave Christensen hired former UW assistant and former Bowling Green coach Gregg Brandon as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and Danilo Robinson as the new defensive line coach.
Brandon coached in Laramie for four seasons under Paul Roach and had a winning record in four of six seasons at Bowling Green. Christensen said Brandon is an expert on the spread offense, having been Urban Meyer’s offensive coordinator before becoming head coach at Bowling Green.
Robinson has 11 years of coaching experience at Navy, Louisiana-Monroe, his alma mater Utah State and last season at Southwest Minnesota State.
Brandon replaces Marcus Arroyo, who is believed to have taken a position at California. Robinson replaces Jerry Montgomery, who went to Michigan.
DU men’s lacrosse ranked in preseason polls.
The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team, which finished 12-5 last season, is ranked in the top 15 in two preseason polls, No. 12 in the Nike Division I top-20 poll and No. 13 in the USILA Division I coaches poll.
Pioneers coach Bill Tierney said he’s “thankful for the respect from the media and most importantly from the coaches,” but scrimmages this weekend against North Carolina and Georgetown will give the team a more realistic idea of where it stands. DU will definitely know where it stands after the season opener — versus No. 1 Syracuse in the Carrier Dome on Feb. 20.
