Thornton police are trying to find out how a 4-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl ended up wandering around an apartment complex by themselves Friday.
“It looked like they were cold, so a resident let them in and called police,” said Matt Barnes, spokesman for the Thornton Police Department.
Officers responded about 3:45 p.m. and released a plea to the public for help in identifying the children just before 6 p.m.
At 6:25 p.m., while officers were doing a second canvass of the area where the boy and girl were found, a woman was located who said she was the mother of the children.
Barnes had said there was added urgency because the children had indicated that their mother may have been injured.
Barnes said later the mother did not appear to be suffering from any medical emergency.
Police were questioning her Friday night to figure out how the children left the apartment and why the mother had not filed a report that her children were missing.
Neither of the children was properly dressed for the weather.
The children were in the care of the Adams County Department of Social Services. That agency will conduct an investigation to determine whether the children should be returned to the mother. Yesenia Robles, The Denver Post
