A gas-drilling technique known as “fracking” won’t see more oversight in Colorado after a panel of state lawmakers voted Monday against a measure to step up review of gas drilling and complaints.

The Republican-led House Agriculture, Livestock & Natural Resources Committee voted 8-4 Monday against a Democrat’s idea to increase oversight of hydraulic-fracturing methods in natural-gas extraction.

Rep. Roger Wilson of Glenwood Springs said his bill would have required state health regulators to report on an upcoming federal study of fracking and water quality. House Bill 1172 also would have required the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission to report water complaints to the legislature.
