Trooper Daniel Haley received the Colorado State Patrol Medal of Valor this afternoon for rescuing a 10-year-old boy from drowning in icy water.
Haley, 25, received the award at a ceremony in Golden with his wife and 2-year-old daughter in attendance.
On Nov. 27, Haley was off-duty and with his family at the Family FunPlex in Greeley when he saw Brenndan Daviet fall through the ice at a nearby pond.
“When I saw him go under, there was no decision after that,” Haley said.
The ice broke underneath Haley as he was rescuing Brennan, submerging them both in the frigid water. Haley managed to keep Brenndan afloat and get him to the shore.
Both were treated for hypothermia.
Brenndan and his mom, Bobbi, were at the ceremony, as well.
Haley is the 42nd person to receive the award in the Colorado State Patrol’s 75-year history.
He said: “It’s overwhelming and it’s humbling, especially to be honored by the Colorado State Patrol with all the incredible things we do.”
