SAN JOSE, Calif. — EBay said Tuesday its electronics- buyback service will purchase old smartphones for at least $200 as the company anticipates a crush of consumers replacing them with Verizon Wireless’ version of the iPhone — available online today and in stores Thursday.

Under the promotion, Instant Sale will pay $200 for a functional iPhone 3GS, Droid X, Evo 4G or Galaxy S Vibrant. This is the same price Verizon will charge for the 16-gigabyte iPhone with a two- year wireless contract. Instant Sale also will offer $200 to $450 for an iPhone 4 from AT&T.

Instant Sale is one of a number of services that let people trade in consumer electronics for money. The Associated Press
