SEOUL — South Korea, trying to contain the worst-ever outbreak of hoof-and-mouth disease, will temporarily remove import tariffs on powdered milk to help ease jumps in local prices.

The government will permit duty-free imports of as much as 9,000 metric tons of powdered milk in the first half, the government said Wednesday.

South Korea has put down 34,000 milk cows, or 7.9 percent of the national herd, since the disease was first reported in November.
