The Denver Pioneers play Florida Atlantic at 7 p.m. tonight at Magness Arena in a battle of first-place men’s basketball teams in the Sun Belt Conference.

DU (11-12, 7-3) leads the Sun Belt West by half a game over Arkansas State. “We’ve worked all season to put ourselves in a good position in the conference race,” DU coach Joe Scott said. “Now we have to learn how to make being in this position meaningful.”

DU won the West Division six years ago.

Florida Atlantic (18-7, 10-1) leads the East by three games. Division winners draw a bye in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament.

“By far and away, Florida Atlantic is the best team in this league,” Scott said. “But our season isn’t about just this game. It’s about all the games we have left in the month.”

Mammoth trades for Campeau.

The Colorado Mammoth on Wednesday acquired forward Tim Campeau and a second-round pick in the National Lacrosse League draft from the Minnesota Swarm for forward Jamie Shewchuk and a fourth-round selection in 2012.

Colorado’s 1-4 start prompted the trade.

“The results until now haven’t been acceptable,” said Mammoth president and general manager Steve Govett. “Tim is a gritty, tough role player that does his job extremely well.”

In two-plus seasons in the NLL, Campeau has 25 goals and 58 assists. He is expected to join the Mammoth in Boston in time for Saturday’s game against the Blazers.

CU’s Ghent good as gold.

University of Colorado skier Erika Ghent was awarded a gold medal for her overall performance at the conclusion of the 25th Winter World University Games last week in Turkey.

Ghent was the only alpine skier, male or female, to finish in the top 10 in four races, topped by a silver medal in the super-G.

UNC wrestlers no match for Wyoming.

Pins from Shane Onufer, LJ Helbig and Matthew McLaughlin and Joe LeBlanc’s technical fall powered Wyoming to a 43-3 rout of Northern Colorado in a Western Wrestling Conference dual in Greeley.

Casey Cruz produced UNC’s points with a 7-3 victory at 133 pounds. Cruz, a junior from Wasson High School, has won 13 of his last 15 matches.
