GREELEY, Colo.—An attorney for the family of a suspect shot and killed by officers after a Weld County sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot says his clients might drop legal action for an apology.
Denver attorney Michael Evans sent a notice this week to the Weld County sheriff’s department and the Greeley and Evans police departments saying that Rueben Reyes’ family might sue unless a settlement can be reached. The family claims officers used excessive force when they shot Reyes.
Sheriff John Cooke told the Greeley Tribune Thursday that he wouldn’t write a letter of apology.
Officers say they shot Reyes after he shot and killed Deputy Sam Brownlee during a struggle Nov. 23. They say Reyes stopped in Evans after leading them on a chase in a car reported stolen.
