Peter Van Petegen, a Paris-Roubaix winner and two-time Tour of Flanders winner, has been appointed spring cobblestone classics advisor by Team Garmin-Cervelo, the team announced Friday.

The Belgian, who retired in 2007, will concentrate on the following spring classics held on cobblestones: Milan-San Remo, Dwars Door Vlaandaren-Waregem, Gent-Wevelgem, Tour of Flanders and Paris-Boubaix.

Jonathan Vaughters, CEO of the Boulder-based team, will direct the other races, including the Grand Tours.

“We’ve said all along that we’ve wanted to become stronger in the classics and now we’re coming 2011 with one of the strongest classics lineups in the peloton, with one of the best advisors,” Vaughters said in a statement. “Having never ridden the cobbled classics myself, I thought it was important to have someone else in the car with that experience.”
