A patrol deputy with the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office is launching an effort to create a memorial license plate for law enforcement.

After Weld County Deputy Sheriff Sam Brownlee was fatally shot in the line of duty in November, Deputy Basil Marciniak became inspired to create the license plate, according to a news release from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.

The license plate will honor law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

Marciniak contacted the Colorado Concerns of Police Survivors, an organization dedicated to assisting families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, with his idea.

Marciniak and the group designed the license plate and are in the process of obtaining the required 3,000 signatures.

If Marciniak can get all of the required signatures, the design will then go to the state for approval. If approved, people can purchase the plates after making a one-time $50 donation to Colorado C.O.P.S.

Anyone who wants to sign the petition may do so at the front desk of the LCSO Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or at other participating law enforcement agencies statewide.
