CHADRON, Neb. — Reggie Evans made two free throws with four seconds left, and made 5-of-6 at the line in the final 31 seconds, as Metro State held on for a 69-65 win over Chadron State on Friday.
The Roadrunners (18-4, 15-3 RMAC) had only seven players available because of injuries to two starters, and could never shake the Eagles (5-17, 3-15).
Chadron’s Kevin McClelland cut Metro’s lead to two points with a layup with 1:20 remaining, then Evans hit two free throws with 31 seconds left to give the Roadrunners a 65-61 edge. McClelland drained a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to cut the margin to one point. With six seconds left, Metro State’s Brandon Jefferson made the first and missed the second free-throw attempt, but Evans grabbed the offensive rebound and sealed the game with two free throws.
Evans finished with a game-high 20 points.
Metro State was outrebounded 28-24 and was outshot 53.3 percent to 43.8, but committed only six turnovers.
Nebraska-Kearney 77, Regis 69
KEARNEY, Neb. — Michael Vandahl’s 3-pointer ignited a 19-9 run that gave the Lopers (9-13, 7-11 RMAC) an eight-point lead, and the Rangers (6-16, 3-15) would not make up the lost ground.
Curtis Mitchell led Regis with 30 points.
Women
Metro State 68, Chadron State 44
CHADRON, Neb. — Metro State hit on all cylinders in a victory over Chadron State, the sixth consecutive win for the women’s basketball team.
With the victory, the Division II 12th-ranked Roadrunners remained tied with Fort Lewis atop the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings at 17-1.
The Roadrunners (21-1) got points from 11 players, led by Jasmine Cervantes’ 10.
Metro State had a 43-34 rebounding advantage over the Eagles (5-17, 3-15) and committed only 12 turnovers.
Nebraska-Kearney 80, Regis 56
KEARNEY, Neb. — Former Colorado Springs School standout Vanessa Leeper scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Lopers (12-10, 11-7 RMAC) past the Rangers (8-14, 7-11).
Saline Kuiper led Regis with 13 points.
