Nothing says “I love you” like something handmade
Even if you don’t recall — or are too young to remember! — its debut in New York in 1970, you’ve most likely seen a re-creation of the artist Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE sculpture. Over the years, it has found its way into pop culture via postage stamps, T-shirts, posters, jewelry and wall decor. Now you can surprise your valentine with your very own handmade reproduction through this project adapted from the blog . These supplies are readily available at big-box craft stores. YOU WILL NEED
16-by-20-inch canvas
Oversized chipboard letters
Paint in your desired colors
Craft glue or glue gun
Pencil
DIRECTIONS
Step 1: Paint your canvas using a brush — not spray paint, as it will not provide the desired coverage.
Step 2: Lay the letters out on the canvas. Avoid the temptation to take creative license with the layout, as Robert Indiana intended the “L” and “O” to be aligned atop the “V” and “E.” The “O” should lean slightly to the right. Use a pencil to apply tick marks for reference.
Step 3: Remove the letters and paint them. Allow adequate time for them to dry.
Step 4: Using a glue gun or heavy-duty craft glue, adhere the letters to the canvas with your tick marks as a guide.
Step 5: Attach an oversized red bow and present the canvas to your valentine, with love, of course.
