COLORADO SPRINGS — A man who fell to his death from the roof of a 12-story building in downtown Colorado Springs had faced up to four years in prison for charges related to a construction scam.

Colorado Springs police are investigating whether 35-year-old Jeremy Eckels jumped from the Alamo Building on Friday morning. Police said Eckels went to court downtown for a sentencing hearing on theft charges but left the courthouse. Witnesses reported his fall about a half-hour after his hearing was scheduled to start.

Colorado Springs police spokesman Steve Noblitt said Eckels appeared to be on the roof alone. It’s unclear how he reached the roof.
