Denver Post sports section one of only three in national top 10 in three categories

The Denver Post sports section has won the “Triple Crown” from The Associated Press Sports Editors judging for the 2010 year.

The Post was named in the top 10 in three categories: daily, Sunday and special sections in the APSE’s largest division — 175,000 and over circulation. This is the third year in a row The Post’s Sunday section was named top 10, and fifth time in the past eight years. Also winning the Triple Crown in the division this year were The Dallas Morning News and Los Angeles Times.

Denver Post staff writer Ryan Casey was named in the top 10 in “explanatory reporting” for his project on the impact of concussions beyond athletics in high school. It was published Oct. 17. .

The top 10 in writing contests are later judged to be ranked 1-10, and the winner is announced at the ASPE’s summer conference. Casey, who joined The Post in 2009, works as the Post Preps online editor.

The annual judging took place this week at the National Sports Journalism Center on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
