Former Democratic U.S. Rep. Betsy Markey was appointed assistant secretary for intergovernmental affairs at the Department of Homeland Security in Washington.

“Betsy Markey brings more than 30 years of experience in public service and the private sector to her new role at the Department of Homeland Security and will be a valuable asset in leading our efforts to engage closely with state, local and tribal governments across the United States,” DHS spokesman Adam Fetcher said.

Markey starts her job next week.

In November, Markey lost her seat to Republican challenger Cory Gardner in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District.
