BARCELONA, Spain — It is the modern phonemaker’s dilemma: In the touch-screen era, how do you stand out from the crowd when most cellphones are nearly identical glassy rectangles?

To get some attention, hardware makers are being forced to find new ways to appeal to buyers less interested in processor speeds than in what apps the devices can run and how easily they can access e-mail and Facebook. It boils down to software.

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week, some phonemakers are responding by introducing devices with a twist, hoping they can entice buyers with unique features such as 3-D capabilities.
