Citizen rescuers turned over the fate of a wounded Canada goose to the local and state game handlers at the Washington Park Lake after five days of trying to catch the bird with the arrow in its chest.
“We’re still hoping for a good ending, that someone can catch it and get it the veterinary attention it needs,” said Linda Neely, a liaison for the rehabilitation group Wild B.I.R.D.
She said park rangers and the Colorado Division of Wildlife have vowed to continue to try to catch and help the bird, but it appears infection has set in.
The final day included intervention by Denver police against one would-be rescuer. Four cars responded about 7:30 a.m. this morning after a call that “one person thought another person was mentally unstable,” said Lt. Matt Murray.
Neely said she made the call because a woman she did not know in her 40s and 50s was chasing the bird and running out onto the ice.
“She thought she knew better how to catch the bird than we did, and she was making it impossible for us to do that,” she said. “We were just about to catch the bird yesterday, after waiting an hour in one place, and she came running at it yelling and it took off.”
She said police asked the woman to leave.
