MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay will miss at least four weeks with a left shoulder injury, a potentially serious blow to Memphis’ playoff chances.

Gay suffered the injury in the second quarter of Tuesday night’s 102-91 victory over the 76ers.

An MRI on Wednesday showed a partial dislocation of the shoulder. The 6-foot-8 forward will begin rehabilitation in a week and be re-evaluated in four weeks.

Gay is averaging 19.8 points per game and six rebounds per game.

His loss is troublesome for the Grizzlies because they are in the middle of a four-game winning streak and are vying with the Jazz and Nuggets for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.

No more “interim” for Silas

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Bobcats removed the interim tag from coach Paul Silas, rewarding him with a one-year extension after he helped get Charlotte into playoff contention following a miserable start under Larry Brown.

“It’s a very exciting day for me knowing I’ll be here this year and next year and have a chance to really make this team special,” Silas said. “There’s a long way to go, but we’re getting there.”

Silas, 67, has led the Bobcats to a 15-13 mark to get within one game of the Pacers for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Timberwolves are shutting down point guard Jonny Flynn for the next week, hoping it will help his recovery from major hip surgery last summer.
