A federal agency denied an effort to rename Kit Carson Mountain in the San Luis Valley.
The Gazette reported that the U.S. Board on Geographic Names in Washington voted 10-0 Thursday to deny the petition to name the 14,265- foot peak near Crestone “Mount Crestone.”
Board members felt to rename it would cause confusion, since there are two other fourteeners in the area named Crestone Peak and Crestone Needle.
