U.S. 50 will not reopen between Cañon City and Salida today or Saturday as crews work to clear the debris of Monday’s rockslide, the Colorado Department of Transportation said.

“The process is going very slow due to the large size of the rocks. Crews are blasting, drilling and hammering the rocks to break them down and 10 trucks are on site hauling the material away,” CDOT Spokeswoman Stacey Stegman said.

Stegman said that an estimated 7,000 tons of rock fell in the slide. Damage to the road itself appears minimal, said Stegman.

Stegman said it is unsure whether the road will be able to reopen Sunday.

“We are working as hard and as fast as we can to clear this rock and open the road to traffic,” Stegman said.
