JUPITER, Fla. — Cardinals outfielder Jim Edmonds is retiring at age 40.

Edmonds injured his right Achilles tendon while rounding the bases after a home run last September for Cincinnati and never played again.

Edmonds signed a minor- league contract with the Cardinals this month and was still undergoing treatment.

But team doctors told Edmonds the injury was so severe he would not be medically cleared to play, and that he could hurt himself even more.

The popular center fielder was a four-time all-star and eight-time Gold Glove winner in 17 seasons. He helped the Cardinals win the 2006 World Series.

Arrest won’t distract Tigers.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland is confident slugger Miguel Cabrera’s arrest this week will have no effect on the team’s performance.

Cabrera was arrested late Wednesday on suspicion of drunken driving in Fort Pierce, Fla.

“It is not going to be a disruption for our team. Trust me,” Leyland said.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said he wasn’t sure when Cabrera would report to camp.

Footnotes.

Twins pitcher Francisco Liriano missed Minnesota’s first official workout of the spring in Fort Myers, Fla., because of a sore shoulder that he deemed minor.

• Outfielder Hunter Pence and the Astros have gone to salary arbitration in the third and final case of the offseason.
