A man was in the hospital Saturday after suffering a gunshot wound in front of the Denver office of a state senator, police said.

Police Lt. Matt Murray said paramedics transported one man to Denver Health Medical Center after a shooting at Grape Street and 33rd Avenue about 2:15 p.m.

The victim’s name was not made public, and his condition wasn’t revealed.

Sen. Mike Johnston said the area has struggled with gang violence for years, and he believes this event was gang-related.

“They shot him in the back, right in front of my office,” said the Denver Democrat, who was not at work at the time.

“Gang violence continues to be a significant problem in the area,” he said.

Murray said police are investigating the incident.
