LAWRENCE, KAN. — Tad Boyle had seen enough.
It was late in the first half today at Allen Fieldhouse, and Boyle’s Colorado Buffaloes had just allowed their eighth three-pointer in under 17 minutes of play.
The decibel level was climbing as quickly as the deficit, and perhaps he could feel the game slipping away.
So Boyle — in one quick moment — exploded off his seat, signaled for a timeout, and unleashed a fury-filled plea for better defense.
Actually, there was little Boyle could do or say on Saturday.
Colorado simply couldn’t hang with No. 1 Kansas, falling 89-63 in front of a capacity crowd of 16,300.
The loss dropped the Buffaloes to 16-11 overall and 5-7 in the Big 12.
Perhaps the result wasn’t surprising — CU has now lost 28 straight at Allen Fieldhouse — but it’s hard to imagine that Boyle pictured this.
Boyle, who played for Kansas from 1981 to 1985, was returning for his first game at his alma mater in decades. And recent history offered positive reassurance as well.
Back on January 25, the Buffaloes had taken the Jayhawks to the wire in an 82-78 loss at the Coors Events Center. Alec Burks and Cory Higgins had gashed the Kansas defense with penetration and combined for 44 points.
But on Saturday, the Jayhawks scorched the Buffaloes from the start, hitting eight of their first 10 3-pointers.
Burks led Colorado with 15 points on six-of-12 shooting, while Higgins added 14 points.
