The year started with 96 chief-executive changes announced in January, and many of them involved high-profile technology companies, according to outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Notable tech departures include Google’s Eric Schmidt, Advanced Micro Devices’ Dirk Meyer and Apple’s Steve Jobs, who announced a temporary leave of absence for an undisclosed medical reason.

Schmidt will step down in April, handing the reins over to Google co-founder Larry Page.

Overall, 17 of the CEO changes announced last month were from companies in telecom, computers and electronics.

Total departures disclosed in January were 8 percent higher than in January 2010, when 89 CEO departures were announced.
