A skier is reported to have been killed in an avalanche in Pitkin County this afternoon, the Sheriff’s Department said.

No information about the victim was released.

The person was skiing with two companions just after 4 p.m. in an area outside the ski boundaries at Snowmass when the slide happened.

The companions told ski patrollers they found the victim, but the person was dead.

Because of darkness and risk of another slide, authorities postponed recovering the body until Wednesday morning, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Department.

The death would mark the fourth from avalanches in Colorado this season, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

A 19-year-old from Meeker, James Sizemore, was killed Sunday afternoon when his snowmobile was overtaken by an avalanche in in Rio Blanco County.
