COLORADO SPRINGS — A Colorado Springs pastor accused of stealing from his former church has been ordered to pay back nearly $100,000.

The Rev. Don Armstrong Friday received a four-year deferred sentence and four years of probation. He pleaded no contest to felony theft and submitted an Alford plea to a misdemeanor theft count, acknowledging a jury might convict him.

Armstrong was accused of taking almost $400,000 from Grace Episcopal Church and St. Stephen’s Parish to pay for his children’s education. His lawyer has said church officials knew he was using the money for his children in place of getting raises.

Prosecutors wanted him to pay $291,000 in restitution, but the judge ordered that he pay only $99,247.
