DENVER — Call him obsessed. In 2010, Phil Farrell visited 32 states and 18 countries in a quest for beerbut at the Wynkoop Brewing Co., Farrell is called “champ.”

The brewpub named Farrell — a commercial pilot and home brewer from Cumming, Ga. — its 2011 “Beerdrinker of the Year” on Saturday.

The four-time “beerdrinker” finalist’s philosophy suggests a man with an almost religious belief in fermented hops: “Beer helps connect people. Beer is the greatest gift ever given to the human race and is meant to be shared with others.”

Farrell will receive free beer for life at the Wynkoop (a bit of a commute from the Peach State), $250 worth of beer at his local brewpub and clothing proclaiming him “Beerdrinker of the Year.” Tom McGhee, The Denver Post
