Colorado men’s basketball is still riding the wave from its upset of No. 5 Texas on Saturday.
Sophomore Alec Burks nabbed his second Big 12 player of the week honor this season, following a week that saw him average 23.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in two wins. CU also beat Texas Tech, 71-68.
Burks scored 33 in the 91-89 win over Texas.
“He was in a groove offensively (against Texas),” CU coach Tad Boyle said today during the Big 12 coaches teleconference. “Alec is a special player when he’s got the ball in his hands.
“The thing I appreciate what he’s done this year is, he has really been a team player. I know he had 33 points and 10 rebounds against Texas, but to me, more importantly, is he had four assistants and just one turnover.”
Burks also took the honor after CU upset Missouri in January.
“He’s really tried to play within the team concept but understanding, too, that we need him to score the ball,” Boyle said. “In games like we had Saturday against Texas, when he’s feeling it, he can go off. He’s a special player, and we really needed that performance he had in the second half (24 of his 33 points) against Texas.”
Baylor freshman Perry Jones III was named the Big 12’s rookie of the week.
