An arson investigator’s van caught fire early this morning in southwest Denver as he was inside a nearby home looking into two other vehicle fires.

The incident happened at about 12:30 a.m. in the 3900 block of West Kentucky Avenue, said Lt. Phil Champagne, a Denver Fire Department spokesman.

Fire officials are now investigating three possible cases of vehicle arson, including the van.

“If in fact it’s related to the two car fires and an arsonist is responsible, it’s a great concern to us that an individual would be so bold,” Champagne said.

The van fire started in the engine compartment and it was quickly extinguished, before it could spread into the cab, Champagne said.

All three fires are suspicious, Champagne said, and the fire department’s investigation is ongoing.

No suspect has been arrested.
