SAGUACHE, Colo.—The Bureau of Land Management accidentally made a paleontological find when a heavy equipment operator unearthed an ancient bone on BLM lands.
The BLM said Friday the discovery of a likely late Pleistocene mammal bone was made by an operator during an excavation.
The San Luis Valley Public Lands Center was notified of the discovery, and the surrounding area has been closed off while the site is being assessed.
Fossil finds on federal land are protected by the 2009 Paleontological Resources Preservation Act. It’s a violation of federal law to remove, damage, alter or deface any paleontological resources protected by the act.
