GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The number of oil and gas drilling permits issued in Colorado so far this year is behind last year’s pace, but that could be partly because permits are now good for two years instead of one.

The Daily Sentinel reports the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission had issued 602 permits for the year through Feb. 27. That puts it on pace to approve fewer than 4,000 for the year. Nearly 6,000 were approved last year.

Commission Director Dave Neslin says that because permits are now good for two years instead of one, there are fewer parties refiling for permits when they expire.

Neslin also says companies have a backlog of 4,755 approved permits for wells they have yet to drill.
