Five Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men’s basketball teams were selected for the NCAA Central Regional tournament in Mankato, Minn.
Fort Lewis, which won the RMAC Shootout, earned the No. 2 seed and will face No. 7 Mesa State. Regular- season champion Colorado Mines will be the No. 3 seed and play No. 6 Adams State, and No. 5 Metro State will play fourth seed University of Mary.
Minnesota State received the top seed and will host the tournament, which begins Saturday.
• The RMAC Shootout champion Fort Lewis women’s basketball team received the No. 1 seed in the Central Regional and will host the first round of the Division II tournament, facing No. 8 Adams State on Friday.
No. 2 seed Metro State will face No. 7 Winona State and No. 6 Colorado Christian will play Wayne State.
DU’s Demopoulos ties scoring record.
University of Denver men’s lacrosse player Alex Demopoulos tied the single-game record for most points with eight as he led the Pioneers (3-1) over Manhattan (0-5) 17-6 in the final game of the DU Face-Off Classic on Sunday.
With six goals and two assists, Demopoulos became the second Pioneer in 24 hours to tie the record set by Joey Murray in 2007. Mark Matthews tied the record Saturday against Jacksonville on three goals and five assists.
Byrd wins fourth state title.
Denver’s Louie Byrd won a Colorado Golden Gloves championship in a fourth weight class late Saturday when he stopped Emmanuel Montano of D-Town Boxing in the second round at 114 pounds at the Crowne Plaza Convention Center in Denver.
Byrd, who fights for the Backyard Brawlers team, advanced to the regional Golden Gloves tournament. If he’s successful there, he will move to the National Golden Gloves in Indianapolis next month. He’s a three-time champion in the national tournament, winning at 106, 108 and 112 pounds.
