The Boulder County Coroner has identified the man killed in a hit-and-run Saturday in Boulder, as Ronald L. Keithline, 54.

Keithline died after being struck at about 6:30 p.m. by a vehicle in the northbound merge lane of Broadway, just north of Baseline Road, Boulder spokeswoman Kim Kobel said.

Kobel said witnesses told police that a dark-colored SUV struck Keithline, stopped briefly, and then drove away. Another vehicle had swerved onto the sidewalk to avoid hitting Keithline just 30 seconds earlier, witnesses said.

Kobel said Keithline had a history of interactions with police, and was known to lay in roadways.

But Emily Keithline, the victim’s mother, said she didn’t believe her son intentionally put himself in harm’s way.

Emily Keithline said her son had physical problems related to a fishing accident and was prone to accidents. She said he may have fallen and been unable to get up.

Ronald Keithline lived in Lakewood, and was visiting his brother in Boulder on Saturday, she said.

“He was a beautiful human being,” Emily Keithline said of her son. “He would give you the shirt off his back.”

Police are looking for a dark-colored Toyota RAV4 or Nissan Xterra-type vehicle, Kobel said. Anyone with information about the incident should call the Boulder Police Department’s Traffic Supervisor at 303-441-3333.
