Lauren Ciccomascolo’s goal and two assists Wednesday failed to rescue the University of Denver women’s lacrosse team from a 10-6 loss to Vermont at DU’s Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

Ciccomascolo, Melissa Maier and Alex Befus scored for the Pioneers (1-6) to cut their deficit to 5-3 and DU was within a goal at 7-6 midway through the second half. But the Catamounts (2-3) scored the last three goals of the game.

Western State coaching staff grows.

Western State football coach Jas Bains hired Kelly Ledwith as an assistant to work with the team’s defense. Ledwith coached the last three seasons at Fresno (Calif.) City College, the last two as defensive coordinator.

CSU golfers place eighth.

The Colorado State women’s golf team finished eighth at the 15-team UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev. The Rams had a 38-over-par 902 total, 58 strokes behind tournament champion and 25th-ranked Pepperdine. Wyoming finished 14th at 931.

Brianna Espinoza was CSU’s top player. The junior from Phoenix tied for 16th at 3-over-par 219.
