BOULDER — History is history, no matter how it looked getting there.

Broomfield won its fifth consecutive Class 4A state girls basketball championship Friday, grinding out a 48-38 overtime win against rival Longmont at the Coors Event Center.

The Eagles became the first girls team in state history, regardless of classification, to win five straight titles.

Broomfield outscored Longmont 14-4 in overtime, setting of a chant of “Five-peat” from the large and loud student section.

It was a heartbreaking loss for Longmont, who was five seconds away from winning the game in regulation.

Longmont took a 34-32 lead in the final minute of the fourth quarter after a layup by Gatorade Player of the Year Jamie Katuna and a pair of free throws.

But Broomfield still had time for one last possession.

Point guard Brittney Zec drove the court and tossed up an off-target shot, but teammate Bre Burgesser grabbed the rebound and scored the tying basket with less than five seconds left.

For all the drama of the game’s final minutes, it was otherwise the type of game where it might be better to just toss out the box score. Players from neither team will want to remember these kind of numbers.

The teams combined for only 10 points in the first quarter, and only 22 in the first half, when Longmont took an 11-10 lead. Both teams shot less than 22 percent from the field in the first half, and combined for 12 turnovers.

It took until the fourth quarter for either team to find much offensive rhythm, with the rivals trading baskets and leads in a frenetic final quarter.
