GREELEY, Colo.—The technique of horizontal drilling has led to an oil and gas boom in northern Colorado.
The Greeley Tribune reported Friday that there’s been an increase in the number of oil and gas companies shifting their resources from vertical to horizontal drilling
Companies say horizontal drilling is more expensive than vertical, but the payout can be enormous. Drilling down and then angling out horizontally can improve access to oil and gas and increases the number of wells that can be drilled from one pad.
In 2009, Weld County issued 12 horizontal drilling permits for the year. In February, the county received 36 permits for the technique.
The county was getting about 18 applications per month a year ago This year, the monthly average has doubled to 36.
