PUEBLO, Colo.—Sydney Bost’s attempted 3-pointer missed off the rim as time expired, and No. 7 Sanford defeated No. 4 Evangelical Christian Academy 31-28 in the 2A girls state championship game Saturday.

ECA’s Heidi Mann made it 29-28 with a basket with less than 30 seconds remaining. Sanford’s Tori Mortensen and Whitney Canty made free throws in the final 11.7 seconds to give Sanford (22-4) the 3-point lead.

Mortensen had a game-high 14 points, all in the second half.

It’s the first basketball title in Sanford’s history.

Ellen Brandenstein and Mann led ECA (24-3) with 10 points apiece.

Sanford trailed 14-10 at the half but used a swarming defense to force numerous turnovers in the third quarter. Sanford outscored ECA 13-4 in the quarter and took a 23-18 lead into the fourth.
