A woman gave birth to a baby inside an SUV on the side of the highway this morning with the help of emergency personnel.
The mother gave birth about 6:10 a.m. on the shoulder of eastbound 6th Avenue near the Knox Street overpass, said Lt. Phil Champagne, a Denver Fire Department Spokesman.
The mother and child are doing fine, Champagne said. They were taken to a local hospital for a precautionary check-up.
Champagne said the woman started having contractions this morning and she and her husband set out for the hospital in the family SUV.
On the way the couple realized they weren’t going to make it and the husband pulled over to the highway shoulder and the woman gave birth.
Firefighters, police and paramedics were on scene and helped the couple and the newborn get safely to the hospital.
