LIMON, Colo.—The first police officer to be killed in the line of duty in Limon has been laid to rest.

Hundreds of people gathered in the eastern Colorado town on Tuesday to honor 27-year-old Jay Sheridan. Fellow law enforcement officers packed the funeral service, creating a sea of blue uniforms in the high school gymnasium.

Authorities say Sheridan was shot March 9 while trying to serve a Tennessee warrant on a suspect who was wanted on a sex offender registry violation. Fifty-two-year-old Dennis Mark Hasty, was later found dead after a 4-hour standoff. Authorities say he apparently shot himself.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, in Denver for a conference, extended her condolences to Sheridan’s family. Gov. John Hickenlooper ordered state flags lowered to honor the officer.

Sheridan leaves a wife and a 21-month-old daughter.
