Covidien chief executive Richard Meelia will retire this summer, and Jose Almeida, currently head of the company’s medical-devices franchise, will become its second CEO following its 2007 spinoff from Tyco International.
Almeida, 48, is being promoted after more than four years running Covidien’s largest business, which became a clear focus as Covidien reshaped its portfolio through acquisitions and divestitures after the separation from Tyco.
