Fort Lewis women’s basketball coach Mark Kellogg was named the Russell Athletic/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Central Region coach of the year, WBCA spokesperson Jack Watford announced Tuesday.

Kellogg was ranked as the fourth-winningest active coach in NCAA Division II before the 2010-11 season (119-38, .758). Fort Lewis’ 28-3 season in 2010-11 improved his career record to 147-41 (.778).

UNC barely misses upsetting Nebraska.

The Northern Colorado baseball team lost 5-4 to Nebraska in Lincoln. Cornhusker Josh Scheffert singled in the winning run with two out in the ninth inning. The Bears’ record dropped to 1-12, while Nebraska improved to 15-7.

The Bears kept the Huskers off the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth, thanks in part to several good defensive plays, including a leaping grab by second baseman T.J. Berge to save an extra-base hit in the bottom of the second. Senior Joe Sawicki came out of the bullpen for the first time since 2008, allowing one run and taking the loss to fall to 0-4 for the season.
