DENVER—At the request of area communities, federal regulators are letting the public review a company’s plans to dispose of waste from its proposed uranium and vanadium mill near Naturita (nat-yur’-EE’-tah) in southwest Colorado.
The Environmental Protection Agency is taking public comments through April 8 on plans by Toronto-based Energy Fuels Corp. for a lined tailings cell and an evaporation pond at the Pinon Ridge mill. The cell and pond would each be no more than 40 acres.
EPA approval of the size and number of the tailings cell and pond would be contingent on Energy Fuels submitting a surface and groundwater monitoring plan.
Colorado health officials have already granted a radioactive materials license for the mill to operate. Health officials must approve engineering plans before construction begins.
