Firefighters have fully contained a 7-acre wildfire that broke out this morning east of U.S. 36 and south of Nelson Road near Longmont, leading Boulder County officials to impose a fire ban on the entire county.
The Tollgate Fire is located near the 4100 block of Nelson Road. As of 7:51 a.m., the fire was about 7 acres in size and just south of Nelson Road. Nelson Road is closed between U.S. Hwy. 36 and N. 55th Street.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital after being overcome with smoke.
Boulder County sheriff’s spokesman Rick Brough said an emergency notification message went out to 1,300 cell phone and landline numbers in the area of Nelson Road, from 39th to 51st Streets, and a half mile to the north and south of Nelson Road. The message warned people to evacuate.
No structures were lost in the fire, but Brough says “a few” structures were threatened.
Twenty-five firefighters from five different agencies were on scene fighting the blaze. Those agencies included: The Colorado State Forest Service, Hygiene Fire Protection District, Boulder Rural Fire Protection District, Lefthand Fire Protection District, and Lyons Fire Protection District.
Today’s forecast calls for a high of 58 with sunny, breezy conditions in the Boulder area. West winds should be in the 26 to 29 mph during the day, shifting to east-northeast winds blowing 6 to 9 mph. Tonight, temperatures will drop to a low of 27.
